Up front this will seem like a crude and unfair analogy so please allow me to explain it. I also admit it's only my opinion but it's how I have come to view things here.

TOL is like a septic or sewer line: it performs a sometimes unpleasant but very important and necessary function, but only when it is kept functioning well.

There are two things that usually go wrong with septic and sewer lines. One is that large items which should never have been allowed to enter, get inside and obstruct the workings. The other is that, over time, tree roots can infiltrate, creeping inside unnoticed until suddenly they're a problem. So in case it needs spelled out...

Obstructions = tolerated trolls and psychotics.

Sneaky root clogs = socks, mobies and other fakes.

Restricted water flow can be ignored for only so long before people quit using the facilities and the whole thing falls into stinky disrepair. The backup can't be contained. It inevitably leaks and spreads, soiling everything.

People you WANT to stay, leave. People who cause the problem seem to thrive and multiply.

If a broken system is to be saved, there's only one way: by manually (forcefully) removing all obstructions so the spread of filth is stopped as water flows freely again.

But that's not enough. You must also prevent future obstructions by putting in place screens and filters as well as inviolable rules of use. Break the rules and the facilities are forever off-limits to you. No grace periods, no second chances, no isolation (which hasn't worked). OUT.

IOW, obstruction removal with immediate and extreme prejudice. Just as you would with your own septic or sewer line.

Lots of clogs here on TOL that only grow worse the longer they're tolerated. This is a job for Roto-Rooter.

Personally, I find that a bit extreme. There are some here who have an odd sense of humour, and it can be taken wrong. I be one of those.


But, I do like your sewer analogy.

So yes...upon establishment of a pattern, boot them. The site never benefits from tolerating them.

I see what you're saying. I'd hate to be in charge of making those calls, however.

Right now we seem to have a lot of people who deny the Deity of the Lord Jesus Christ. I can't even stand to read their posts....and they're EVERYWHERE.

They need to go elsewhere or at least have their access restricted from ECT, which itself could be tightened up. That would solve at least half of the contention on TOL.

And by tightened up, only those who affirm 1 Cor 15:3-4 as the saving gospel today get access (MAD or not), not just trinitarians. That would leave about a dozen or so people, I think, to have good discussions, not including the ones who left but can be invited back.
