They weren't sacrificing Him as the atonement for sin knowingly, so he wasn't asking God to forgive them for that. His atonement covers everyone who achieved righteousness by faith and that includes the ones who lived and died before Him.
I wouldn't say it's the same thing as saying that blood sacrifice isn't part of the law. It seems that mercy is the goal but sacrifice is the means to achieve it, so it can be easy to get confused into thinking that He desires sacrifice.
