Non-literalists may claim to respect literalists but in my experience, there is NO ONE in all of Christendom they hold more deeply in contempt. Your pastor friend's joke is highly focused and targeted...but whatever.
Well, he's a Southern Baptist pastor and a Kentuckian to boot. That makes for a unique POV. He would give me the shirt off his back and has helped our family quite a bit. I suppose we could choose to take offense but then there is so much friendship we'd miss out on. It's kind of like here at TOL. It's really not important what other peoples focus is but rather what my focus is. I want more from TOL than an argument and a handful of angry folks and I want the same from the people more closely associated to me. Like now, I choose to see your points on this matter as concern for me and I appreciate that you have this level of concern considering you really don't know me from Adam. It's nice, thank you!

Gosh, that makes me an oddball! ....or you need to get out more. Well, don't get to thinking that I'm Catholic because I'm not and never have been. There's too much of that doctrine I don't agree with but I still consider them of the Body and will treat them accordingly.

Does he consider himself a literalist? If so, his joke was ironic, and understandable.
"There is one thing worse than going to Hell. That would be going to Hell and having it be a surprise."
        Terence Mc Lean

        [most will be very surprised]

Everyone who has not believed the Gospel of grace is not saved, no matter what else they believe or do.
By that measure, how many professing Christians are on their way to the Lake of Fire?

It's funny that you ask that because sometimes he preaches so literally and other times he doesn't. It depends on the subject matter.
