The Wife of a BEL Hero Calls In

Monday October 16th, 2006. This is show #206.

Summary:

* Husband/Dad Refuses Boss: Jill's husband works for a national pharmaceutical company, and has refused to help them sell Plan B, the abortifacient morning-after pill. Jill is a home-school mom with four kids, and the youngest with a severe heart defect that requires significant medical care, paid for by her husband's employer. While so many pro-life leaders frequently compromise on Do Not Murder, and some defend and even recommend Plan B, Jill's husband heads a family that is an example to us all of how we should honor God!

* The Hawaiian Earthquakes: reinforce the point Bob made to a leading geophysicist that the Earth's crust is NOT stable like it would be after billions of years, but it is still settling since the worldwide flood occurred only about 5,000 years ago.

One more time for us slow people.
Why would there not be earthquakes if the Earth was billions of years old?

Presumably, because things that have potential energy (a plate held in place by friction has the potential to eventually slip and release that stored energy causing an earthquake) eventually uses up that potential energy and comes to a state of rest after its potential energy is turned into kinetic energy. Obviously, these kinds of massive energy releases can't happen forever, and things eventually have to settle down. There is only a finite amount of potential energy that can be released, and the various forces, such as friction, cant keep back that potential energy from being released forever.

Are you familiar with that thing that orbits around the Earth?

Yes, you do know it is receding yes? The force, gravity, which holds it in place in orbit, is not strong enough to keep it there forever. It is slowly receding.

Which actually brings up another important point. If we reverse the time clock, and use the moon's current rate of recession, how much closer would the moon be to the Eath if it was billions of years old? This brings up another important point. The moon exerts its own gravitational force on The Earth, causing the tides, which right now, are more or less optimised for sustaining sea life. But if we go back billions of years, the moon would be somewhat closer to The Earth, and depending on how much closer the moon was, it could theoretically cause deadly tidle waves detrimental to life couldn't it? Something to think about. :think:

Some. The distance to the moon changes from between 360,000 kilometers to 405,000 kilometers. So at it's closest it is 360,000 kilometers away. Considering that we know that the moon is receding around 3.8 centimeters a year if it just kept it’s current recession it would in one billion years be 38,000 kilometers closer (or 10% closer to the earth). This of course doesn't take the added gravitational force into consideration which may have made the recession even slower in the past.

Yea, I only had 1 physics and 1 astronomy class in high school, so I really dont know. But if it was 10% or more closer to the Earth, how would the moon's gravitational field affect Earth's oceanic waves?

It's not my favorite YE argument. The further back in time you go, the slower the decent from the earth would have been because of the gravity between the two bodies. Still if the moon is evern 10% closer to the earth, the laws of gravity should have been affecting it more that the law of conservation of angular momentum. Also at 10% closer the seas would have been so strongly pulled by the moon that life could not have started one billion years ago, let alone four. The concept of life rising out of a stagnate pool of pond scum doesn't fly.

Still there are much GREATER problems for old earthers than the moon's recession.
